Water can be both a source of conflict and a way towards peace. That’s the theme of an international conference on water that UNESCO is hosting on May 13th in Paris. The conference will examine water’s role in sustainable development, safeguarding water resources, and promoting ethical access to water for people around the world.
The conference’s main objective is to advance discussion around water security and peace by bringing together different sectors involved in water management. It will also focus on the intersection between water and gender equality, and will put small island developing states at the center of discussions.
The conference will feature keynote speeches by Irina Bokova, UNESCO’s director general, French President Emmanuel Macron, Senegalese President Macky Sall, and conferences will be led by a combination of UNESCO staff, researchers and academics, and notable figures from private industry.
